Stow Acres Dominates
Field At PGA Junior Series
Stow, Mass.
– At the first round of the 2010 PGA Junior Series event at the North Course at
Stow Acres Country Club in Stow, Mass., Colton Wiggins of Indiana, Pa., took the first round lead in the Boys’
13-15 Division after shooting 2-over-par 74.
The field consisting of over 90 juniors participating from
nine different states as well as Italy
and Argentina,
are competing in a three-day 54-hole stroke play competition.
Stow Acres Country Club has played as one of the hardest
courses so far this summer for the PGA Junior Series. All four divisions’ scoring averages were
over eighty.
Wiggins, who was the 2009 PGA Junior Series Player of the
Year, is familiar with his position after day one but knows that he must remain focused if he wants to win this week for the first
time in 2010.
“The course was playing really hard today,” said
Wiggins. “I made a lot of putts but I
owe a lot of my success today to my preparation yesterday during the practice
round.”
Tae Wan Lee of Howey In The Hills, Fla.,
shot the low round of the day with an even-par 72. He shot a 1-under-par 35 on the back nine
which consisted of two birdies.
He has a two stroke lead over Connor Garrity
of Hollidaysburg, Pa., and Chris Gentle of Lowell, Mass.,
both who shot 2-over-par 74.
First timer to the PGA Junior Series, Juliet Vongphoumy of Providence, R.I.,
has the round one lead for the Girls’ 16-18 Division. Her 3-over-par 75 is good enough for a four stroke
lead over the PGA Junior Series veteran, Brooke Beegle
of Fortville, Ind.
Both players were
playing consistent until they reached the final two holes of the day. Vongphoumy and Beegle finished 3-over-par and 4-over-par respectively for
their final two holes. Both players hope
to finish their rounds better tomorrow and separate themselves from the
field.
Elizabeth DiVincentis of Durham,
Conn., is leading the Girls’
13-15 Division. She shot a 6-over-par 78
for a four stroke lead over Danielle Fuss of Rochester, N.Y.
DiVincentis round
was highlighted by a birdie on the difficult par-3 No. 13.
The second round
starts tomorrow with the Boys’ 16-18 Division playing in the morning wave and
the other three divisions playing in the afternoon. Round two for the PGA Junior Series is
considered moving day and with many players still in the hunt for a victory, it
will be interesting to watch how people play tomorrow.
