PGA Junior Series
Lands At Air
Force Academy
Colorado Springs, Colo., - As our independence day
approaches, and we begin to think about the men and women who have served and
died for this great country, it is only fitting that the 2010 PGA Junior Series
finds itself on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy.
The three day tournament commences Tuesday June 29th
on the Blue Course at the Eisenhower Golf Club in Colorado Springs, Colo.,
and features 80 juniors from 12 different states.
This is the fifth stop on the 2010 PGA Junior Series
schedule. With the higher altitude,
players should have no issue with the length of the golf course this week. However, the Blue Course is known in the area
for its challenging greens. Players will
need to hit precise approach shots if they want to have legitimate birdie
opportunities.
The field is broken down into four divisions, two girls and
two boys, with ages ranging from 13-18. The Boys’ 16-18 and overall girl
winner will each earn a spot in the 35th Junior PGA Championship
held later this summer at Sycamore Hills Golf Club Aug. 2-5 in Fort Wayne, Ind.
This week’s field is headlined by the Girls’ 16-18
Division. Shelby Phillips of Gilbert, Ariz.,
is looking to win for the first time this summer with the PGA Junior Series
after taking home back-to-back top three finishes in the previous two
events.
Jordan Chael of Overland
Park, Kan., is fresh off her come
from behind victory last week in the Girls’ 13-15 Division in St. Louis, Mo.,
at the PGA Junior Series event held at Fox Run Golf Club. She hopes to become the first player to win
back-to-back in 2010.
Our largest division of the week is the Boys’ 16-18. With many first time PGA Junior Series
players, it will be very interesting to watch which players can stand the
pressure of a national tournament and take home the victory.
This summer will also feature points awarded to the top-10
finishers who are American citizens at the nine PGA Junior Series events.
These points help players to qualify for the 7th Junior Ryder
Cup held in late September in Gleneagles,
Scotland.
The U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team will be comprised of six boys and six
girls who are American citizens and members of the high school graduating
class of 2011, or younger.
The PGA Junior Series is one of the premier junior circuit in the country hosting tournaments across the
country for the entire summer. It
features excellent junior golfers at top golf facilities every week. The mission of the PGA Junior Series is to promote
the enjoyment of golf by junior golfers through affordable and competitive
playing opportunities in professionally supervised events organized by the PGA
of America and supported by PGA Professionals.
In its fifteenth year it has conducted 154 events in 41 states.
