Gojuangco and Phillips Win At Air Force Academy
Colorado Springs, Colo., - The final round of the 2010 PGA
Junior Series event at Eisenhower Golf Club provided plenty of quality golf and
well deserving winners. Bobby Gojuangco of San
Diego, Calif., lead
wire-to-wire to take home the Boys’ 16-18 Division after shooting an even-par
72 for a three day total of 1-under-par 213.
It got interesting towards the end of the round when Gojuangco made three straight bogeys on the back nine and
was tied with John Ahern of Morrison,
Colo., heading into No. 17.
Gojuangco made birdie and then
pared the last hole to win by two strokes over Ahern. Ahern had the low round of the final pairing
with a 2-under-par 70. Cameron Harrell of Edwards, Colo. came in third with a three day total
of 217.
“That birdie putt on No. 17 was huge for me after making
three straight bogeys,” said Gojuangco who is only
15-years-old and playing up a division. “I
am excited for the opportunity to play at the Junior PGA Championship later this
summer.”
With his victory, Gojuangco earned
himself an exemption into the 35th Junior PGA Championship Aug. 2-5
at Sycamore Hills Country Club in Fort
Wayne, Ind.
In the Girls’ 16-18 Division, Shelby Phillips of Gilbert, Ariz.,
also lead wire-to-wire to win the division.
She cruised to victory with a nine shot win after shooting an even-par
72 for a three day total of 218.
“I would like to thank both the PGA Junior Series staff and
the Eisenhower Golf Club staff for putting on a great tournament,” said
Phillips who is heading to the Junior PGA Championship later this summer after
earning an exemption this week. “The
golf course played fair and was in great shape.”
Emma Smyser of Naples,
Fla., came in second place with a three day
total of 227 and Shelby Martinek Tempe, Ariz., came in third
place with a three day total of 228.
Ben Moore of Englewood,
Colo., took home the Boys’ 13-15
Division after scoring three solid rounds in the 70’s. He shot a 3-over-par 75 for a three day total
of 226 to win by 4 strokes over Clayton Crawford of Apsen, Colo.
“I played really well today and I’m excited about the
victory,” said Moore who said the turning point to the round was when he
birdied back-to-back holes on his back nine.
“It was a lot of fun playing out here this week.”
Jeremy Paton of Victor, N.Y.,
took home third place after shooting a 76 in the final round.
And in the final division of the day, Jennifer Kempton of Littlon, Colo., won the Girls’ 13-15 Division. Her three day total was 236.
Two PGA Junior Series veterans rounded out the top-3. Caitlin Farris of Oklahoma
City, Okla., came in second place
and Jordan Chael of Overland Park, Kan.,
came in third place.
The PGA Junior Series heads back east to Edmond, Okla.,
