Round Two At Oak Tree CC
Edmond, Okla., - Day two of the 2010 PGA Junior
Series event at Oak Tree Country Club’s East Course, started off with the
completion of the first round for the Boys’ 16-18 Division. After round one Sean Romero of Texarkana, Ark.,
was in the lead.
He was the only player in the entire field to shoot under
par. His 1-under-par 69 was good enough
for a two stroke lead going into the second round over Casey Fernandez of McAlester, Okla.,
who shot a 1-over-par 71.
Upon finishing round one, the Boys’ 16-18 Division proceeded
directly to the first tee of their second round. After round two Romero still had the lead
after shooting another 1-under-par 69 for a two day total of 2-under-par
138.
“I have been hitting the ball pretty good, but my putting
has not been the greatest,” said Romero who birdied both No. 16 and 18. “I knew going into this week if I could make
some putts I would play pretty good.”
Romero extended his two shot lead to three over Casey
Fernandez after Fernandez shot an even-par 70 in round two for a two day total
of 1-over-par 141. Alec Heinen of Edmond,
Okla., is in third place by
himself with a three day total of 143.
“I want to play smart tomorrow but still stay aggressive when
I can,” said Romero.
In the Boys’ 13-15 Division, Nick Heinen
of Edmond, Okla., who is a member at Oak Tree Country Club is leading the deep field after two rounds. He backed up his 1-over-par 71 yesterday with
an even-par 70 today for a two day total of 141.
“I putted really well today,” said Heinen
who has a three stroke lead over Hayden Wood of Edmond, Okla. “I made a lot of solid par saves today and
have used my local knowledge to my advantage.”
Wood had the round of the tournament so far after shooting a
2-under-par 68 for a two day total of 144.
He had the shot of the day when he holed out from 135 yards on the
difficult and demanding par 4, No. 16 for eagle.
Shelby Martinek of Tempe, Ariz.,
shot another 5-over-par 75 to be leading the Girls’ 16-18 Division.
Martinek’s two day total is
150. She has a four stroke lead over
three girls that are all tied for second place with a two day total of 154.
And in the final division, Megan Blonien
of Atlus,
Okla., shot a 10-over-par 80 for
a two day total of 150. She is still
leading the Girls’ 13-15 Division by ten strokes but was disappointed in her
performance today and hopes to play like she did during round one tomorrow in
the final round.
The final round starts tomorrow with all four divisions in
the morning starting at 7:30a.m. Two
exemptions into the 35th Junior PGA Championship held later this
summer in Fort Wayne, Ind., at Sycamore Hills Country Club will be
handed out tomorrow for the overall Girls’ winner and the Boys’ 16-18 winner.
The tournament features 100 juniors from 13 different
states. This is the sixth stop of the
2010 PGA Junior Series schedule and our first time at Oak Tree Country Club.
