Hometown Feel With Champions At Oak Tree CC
Edmond, Okla., - In the final round of the 2010 PGA Junior
Series at the Oak Tree Country Club’s East Course, the Boys’ 13-15 Division
stole the show. Three boys all from Edmond, Okla.,
came in the top three with Hayden Wood, son of PGA touring professional Willie
Wood, taking home first place.
He shot an even-par 70 in the final round for the three day
total of 4-over-par 214. This division
started play on the back nine. He got
off to a fast start with a birdie on No. 11 and had a one shot lead heading
into their back nine over Nick Heinen who finished in
third place.
Sam Humphreys, who was the defending champion from last
year’s PGA Junior Series event in Edmond,
Okla., came in second place with
a three day total of 216. He gave Wood a
run on the second nine when he shot a 1-under-par 34, but came up a little
short after Wood made a stellar birdie on the par-3 eighth.
All three boys, who play together often in Edmond, enjoyed the competition and battling each
other.
The story did not change in the Boys’ 16-18 Division in the
final round after Sean Romero of Texarkana,
Ark., shot another 1-under-par 69
to take home first place. Sean is the son of Art Romero, PGA Head Professional
at Texarkana CC.
His three day total of 3-under-par 207 was good enough for a
five stroke win over Casey Fernandez of McAlester,
Okla. Taylor Moore of Edmond, Okla.,
came in third place with a three day total of 214.
Romero made sure to get off to a fast start and send a message
to the other players that he wanted to win when he shot a 2-under-par 33 on the
front nine. He made back to back birdies
on No. 5 and 6 to separate himself from the field and
cruise to a victory.
In the Girls’ 16-18 Division, Shelby Martinek
came in first place after shooting the low round of the tournament with a
2-under-par 68 for a three day total of 218.
Her putting was the key in the final round. She seemed to make almost every clutch big
putt in her final 18-holes.
Laura Kraft of Jamestown,
N.D., came in second place after
shooting a 4-over-par 74 in the final round for a three day total of 233.
Both Romero and Martinek earned an
exemption into the 35th Junior PGA Championship later this summer at
Sycamore Hills Country Club in Fort Wayne,
Ind.
And in the final Division of the day, Megan Blonien of Altus,
Okla., returned to her normal
self out on the golf course and shot a 4-over-par 74 for a three day total of
224 to win the Girls’ 13-15 Division.
She will also be competing at the 35th Junior PGA
Championship later this summer after she won the South Central Junior PGA Championship
in June.
The PGA Junior Series heads to Stow,
Mass., just outside of Boston, for their next tournament that starts
Monday July 12th. That will
be the 7th stop of the 2010 summer that concludes with the 35th
Junior PGA Championship Aug. 2-5 at Sycamore Hills Country Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
