PGA Junior Series Set
For Exciting Final Round
State College,
Pa., - Quality scores continued
to be the story at the 2010 PGA Junior Series event at the Penn State Golf
Courses. The field of over 160 players
from 16 different states as well as Canada, are competing in the eighth PGA Junior Series event of the
summer on the Blue Course. In the Boys’
16-18 Division, John Chaney of Shaker Hts., Ohio is leading after
round two.
Chaney shot an even-par-72 in round two for a two day total
of 2-under-par 142. He has a two stroke
advantage heading into the final round over round one leader Grant Weaver of Wooster, Ohio., who shot a
3-over-par 75 in round two.
“I bogeyed the first hole today and just did not want to
drop any more shots,” said Chaney who has competed in PGA Junior Series events
before. “I played solid all day but just
missed a few short putts that I hope to see fall tomorrow.”
Chaney had two birdies on the day and with the golf course
extremely receptive to the ability to make a lot of birdies, it is still
anyone’s tournament heading into the final round.
As expected, Aurora Kan of Boothwyn, Pa.,
maintained her lead in the Girls’ 16-18 Division. She shot a 2-under-par 70 for a two day total
of 5-under-par 139.
“I want to defend my title this week,” said the modest Kan who has won here at Penn State
the last two years the PGA Junior Series has been here. “I know the golf course really well and I
have used that to my advantage.”
She did not putt that well today and missed a few short ones
but looks forward to coming out tomorrow and having fun.
She has a four shot lead over Samantha Swinehart
of Lancaster, Ohio,
who matched Kan’s
2-under-par 70 today for a two day total of 1-under-par 143. Swinehart will be
heading to the University
of South Carolina in the
fall to play for the Gamecocks.
In the Boys’ 13-15 Division, Brett Rinker
of Slippery Rock, Pa.,
backed up his stealer round yesterday with a solid even-par 72 for a two day
total of 6-under-par 138.
He has a five stroke lead going into the final round over
Jesse Hazam of Mechanicsburg,
Pa., William Wears of Latrobe, Pa., and Scott
Avery of Lewiston, N.Y., They all have a
two day total of 1-under-par 143.
Rinker was not able to take
advantage of the par 5’s today as he played them at even par but looks towards
tomorrow as a great opportunity to win the event.
And in the final division, Jessica Porvasnik
of Hinckley, Ohio remained in first place for the Girls’
13-15 Division after round two. She shot
a 2-over-par 74 for a three day total of 3-over-par 147.
The Boys’ 16-18 Division will be playing in the afternoon
wave with the other three Divisions playing in the morning wave.
The Boys’ 16-18 winner as well as
the overall Girls winner will both receive an exemption into the 35th
Junior PGA Championship later this summer in Fort Wayne, Ind.,
at Sycamore Country Club.
