Penn State Is In The Books

 

State College, Pa., - The final round of the 2010 PGA Junior Series event at the Penn State Golf Courses provided plenty of drama.  With over 160 players from 16 different states as well as Canada, spectators were bound to witness great golf and exceptional play on the Blue Course. 

 

Aurora Kan of Boothwyn, Pa., captured her third consecutive title at Penn State after shooting a 2-over-par 74 for a three day total of 3-under-par 213. 

 

She did not just cruise to a victory today, as she was pushed to the limit by Samantha Swinehart of Lancaster, Ohio, who came in second place.  Swinehart posted an impressive 1-under-par 71 for a three day total of 2-under-par 214. 

 

Both players battled all day but it was Aurora’s consistency on the back nine and two birdies on No. 15 and No. 17 that secured the win. 

 

Katlyn Elliott of Canada came in third place after shooting a 1-over-par 73 for a three day total of 5-over-par 221. 

 

More golf was needed in the Boys’ 13-15 Division after the PGA Junior Series witnessed another first this week.  Brett Rinker of Slippery Rock, Pa., Jesse Hazam of Mechanicsberg, Pa., and William Wears of Latrobe, Pa., all tied with a three day total of 2-under-par 214. 

 

On the first play-off hole, all three players had make able birdie putts and after both Wears and Hazam lipped out, Rinker made his birdie putt to win the division. 

 

Rinker lead wire-to-wire to win the division and carded the low round of the tournament with his 6-under-par 66 on day one. 

 

The much anticipated final round in the Boys’ 16-18 Division did not disappoint either.  Grant Weaver of Wooster, Ohio, the round one leader, and Chris O’Neill of Glen Allen, Va., were tied going into the last hole. 

 

Weaver reached No. 18, the short par-5 in two and two putted for a one stroke win over O’Neill.  His eagle try lipped out but still obtained the win with the birdie when O’Neill made par.

 

Weaver’s three day total was 1-under-par 215, after shooting a 1-under-par 71 in the final round.  O’Neill came in second place and round two leader, John Chaney of Shake Hts., Ohio rounded out the top three with a three day total of 3-over-par 219.

 

In the Girl’s 13-15 Division, Jessica Porvasnik of Hinckley, Ohio lead wire-to-wire to win her first PGA Junior Series event.  She dominated the division with all three rounds in the low 70’s.  She shot an impressive even-par 72 in the final round for a three day total of 3-over-par 219.

 

Christine Schmitt of Pittsford, N.Y., came in second place and Danielle Fuss of Rochester, N.Y., backed up her first place performance last week with a solid third place this week. 

 

Both Kan and Weaver earned an exemption into the 35^th Junior PGA Championship later this summer in Fort Wayne, Ind., at Sycamore Hills Country Club after winning this week. 

 

The PGA Junior Series is off to Madison, Wis., for their ninth and final stop of the 2010 schedule.  The three day tournament commences Saturday July 24^th, 2010 at Yahara Hills Golf Course on the West Course.
